What are ground source heat pumps?

Whilst costly, Ground source heat pumps are the most efficient heat pumps available and are a viable and effective heating solution for medium to larger homes. We anticipate that the prices will soon come down in price as the industry gets underway. Ground source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the ground in your garden which is transferred and used to heat your home.

As part of a Clean Heat Solutions Limited installation, our heating engineers install pipes underground placed strategically in your garden to absorb heat energy to use for your home. We carefully place these loops to maximise the effectiveness of your heating system.

Why Should You Install a Ground Source Heat Pump?

The features of heat pumps, particularly ground source heat pumps, distinguish them as one of the most dependable and environmentally friendly renewable heat solutions available.

Furthermore, when compared to their renewable energy cousins, ground source heat pump prices tend to produce some of the highest long-term cost savings. In terms of installation, the procedure is also not particularly stressful for homeowners.

The following are the main advantages of installing a ground source heat pump:

Use of a renewable source of energy

Savings in operational costs of up to 50% on heating bills mean that the initial capital investment is quickly repaid.

The UK government offers grants and incentives for heat pumps including the new boiler upgrade scheme

A low-noise heating system that is invisible.

Ground source heat pumps have low operating costs and low maintenance requirements due to their automated nature.

How do Ground Source Heat Pumps work?

A Ground Source Heat Pump collects solar energy, stored in the ground, and manages your home's entire heating and hot water demand.

Loops of pipe are placed in the ground at about one-metre depth to install a Ground Source Heat Pump. The ground temperature here is a consistent 8 – 12 degrees all year. There is significant potential for significant cost savings, but it is critical that you select a heat pump that is appropriately sized for your property.

Ground Source Heat Pumps are a comfortable and environmentally friendly type of heating for larger properties with more exterior space. If you have a smaller property, check out air source heat pumps by clicking the button below.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) will begin in spring 2022 to assist with building decarbonization. It will offer up to £7500 in upfront capital subsidies to help people install heat pumps and, in some cases, biomass boilers in their houses and non-domestic buildings. As an MCS accredited installer, Clean Heat Solutions will administer the grant with Ofgem on your behalf, and deduct the full grant amount from your quotation. In this way, the amount you pay upfront for your heat pump will be much closer to the amount you would pay for a traditional fossil fuel system, making it easier for you to access the significant carbon savings and running cost savings.

Alternative to ground source heat pump

For smaller homes or homes without a garden, air-source heat pumps are a fantastic alternative to ground source heat pumps. Air source heat pumps are compatible with most properties and do not require the installation of pipes underground.
