Underfloor Heating (UFH) Milling
If you want underfloor heating but can't afford major floor build-up, milled underfloor heating could be the answer. By routing aluminium-lined channels directly into existing floorboards or fitting aluminium heat-diffuser plates between joists, we can bring the comfort of underfloor heating to almost any room — without the need to lift and relay your entire floor. Clean Heat Solutions installs these systems across West Sussex and Hampshire, working alongside heat pumps, conventional boilers, and electric heat sources to create efficient, comfortable heating throughout your home.
What Is Underfloor Heating Milling?
Retrofit Underfloor Heating — Without Raising Your Floor by a Single Millimetre
Milled underfloor heating covers two closely related approaches designed for retrofit projects where a traditional screed system isn't practical.
The first is a milled channel system, where shallow grooves are cut directly into existing timber or engineered floorboards. Pipe is then pressed into these channels and covered with aluminium spreader plates, which distribute heat evenly across the floor surface. The total floor build-up is typically just 18–22mm, making it suitable for rooms where door heights and skirting levels can't easily accommodate a thicker floor.
The second is a between-joist system, used when access beneath the floor is available — for example, when working on a suspended timber floor with a void below. Aluminium heat-diffuser plates are clipped between the floor joists, and pipe is run through them to radiate heat upward through the floorboards above. This approach involves virtually no floor build-up at all and is a popular choice in older properties and extensions.
Both systems are compatible with heat pump heating — running at low flow temperatures for maximum efficiency — and can also be connected to a conventional boiler or an electric heat source where appropriate. Clean Heat Solutions will survey your property and recommend the most suitable approach based on your floor construction, heat source, and room-by-room heat loss.

Our Process
How It Works
Survey & Design
We visit your property to assess your floor construction, existing heat source, and room heat requirements, then recommend the most suitable milled or between-joist approach for each area.
Milling & Pipework Installation
Our engineers install the aluminium spreader plates and pipe work with minimal disruption, keeping floor build-up as low as possible and ensuring a clean, professional finish ready for your chosen floor covering.
Connection & Commissioning
We connect the system to your heat source, balance the circuits, and test everything before walking you through how to operate and control your new underfloor heating.
Benefits
Underfloor Heating (UFH) Milling
Minimal Floor Build-Up
Milled systems add as little as 18mm to your existing floor level, meaning you can retrofit underfloor heating without raising doors, adjusting skirtings, or losing significant room height.
Compatible With Heat Pumps
These systems run effectively at the low flow temperatures produced by air and ground source heat pumps, making them an ideal complement to a renewable heating installation and helping to maximise your system's efficiency.
Suitable for Most Existing Homes
Whether you have solid timber floorboards, engineered wood, or a suspended floor with a joist void below, there's a milled underfloor heating solution that can work with your existing floor construction — without a full floor replacement.
Traditional retrofit underfloor heating installations require a new screed layer to be poured on top of the existing floor, raising the floor height by as much as 20mm to 30mm — creating a significant knock-on effect for door frames, skirting boards, thresholds, and floor transitions throughout your home. For many homeowners, this rules out underfloor heating entirely. UFH milling eliminates that problem completely. Because the pipework sits within the existing floor rather than on top of it, there is no height change, no need for extensive remedial joinery work, and far less disruption to your home throughout the installation process. It is also the ideal pairing for an air source or ground source heat pump — underfloor heating's large surface area distributes lower temperature heat evenly and efficiently, which is precisely how heat pumps are designed to operate at their best. The result is a beautifully warm, exceptionally efficient home that feels completely transformed — with a system that was designed properly from the ground up by our Heat Geek Elite approved engineers right here in West Sussex and Hampshire.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
It's suitable for most rooms with timber or engineered wood floors. We'll assess your floor construction during a survey to confirm suitability. Some floor types — such as very thin or structurally stressed boards — may not be appropriate for milling, in which case a between-joist system or an overlay panel system may be a better option.
