Air Conditioning Repairs

When your air conditioning stops cooling, starts dripping or shows an error code, we find the cause and fix it properly, rather than just getting it running again for a week.

Air conditioning that won't cool, leaks or keeps cutting out

Air conditioning tends to fail in the hottest week of the year. The unit runs but blows warm air, water drips down the wall, or a light flashes and nothing happens at all.

Most faults have a clear cause that can be put right. An air conditioner is a type of heat pump, and heat pumps are what we work on every day. Heating and cooling engineers based on Hayling Island, serving Havant, Emsworth and Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

  • Units that won't cool, won't heat or blow warm air
  • Water leaking from the indoor unit
  • Error codes, flashing lights and units that keep cutting out
  • Refrigerant leaks, found and repaired before the system is recharged
  • Noisy fans, bad smells and outdoor units that won't start

How an air conditioning repair works

01

Tell us what's happening

Let us know the make and model, what the unit is doing and any error code it shows. A photo of the label on the indoor unit helps the engineer arrive prepared.

02

Find the cause

We test the system on site, checking the electrics, controls, airflow, drainage and refrigerant circuit until we know what has actually failed.

03

Explain the repair

We tell you what's wrong, what the repair involves and what it will cost before we carry it out. If an older system isn't worth repairing, we'll say so.

04

Repair and test

We carry out the repair, then run the system through a full cycle to check it is cooling, heating and draining as it should.

Why homeowners call us for air con repairs

Heat pump specialists

Air conditioning uses the same refrigerant circuit, compressor and inverter controls as the heat pumps we design, install and service. We are Heat Geek Elite and MCS certified heat pump installers.

We fix the cause, not the symptom

A system that keeps losing refrigerant has a leak. We find and repair it rather than topping the system up and leaving the fault in place.

Clear answers before any work

You'll know the fault and the price before we start, and we'll tell you when replacing makes more sense.

Accredited and insured

We are NAPIT approved, TrustMark registered and RECC members, with public liability insurance through Zurich up to £2 million.

Common air conditioning faults and what they usually mean

Running but not cooling. Often clogged filters or a dirty coil. If the filters are clean, low refrigerant from a leak is a common cause.

Water dripping from the indoor unit. Usually a blocked condensate drain or a failed condensate pump. Switch the unit off to protect your wall and anything below it.

Ice on the pipes or indoor coil. A sign of poor airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the unit off and let it thaw rather than running it harder.

Flashing lights or an error code. The unit has detected a fault and protected itself. Note the code before you reset anything, because it tells the engineer where to start.

Musty smell when it starts. Mould growing in the drain tray or on the indoor coil. A deep clean usually sorts it.

A few checks before you book a repair

Check the remote has working batteries and is set to cool or heat, not fan or dry. Rinse the indoor filters if they are dusty, check the circuit breaker hasn't tripped, and clear anything blocking the outdoor unit. If none of that helps, leave the system off rather than resetting it again and again, which strains the compressor.

Refrigerant leaks and why topping up isn't a repair

Air conditioning is a sealed system. If the refrigerant level is low, it has leaked out somewhere. Adding more without fixing the leak means it escapes again and you pay for the same visit twice.

The right fix is to find the leak, repair it, test that the circuit holds pressure, then recharge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. By law, work on the refrigerant circuit must be carried out by an F-gas certified engineer.

What affects the cost of an air con repair

We price each repair once we know what has failed. The cost depends on:

The fault itself. Clearing a blocked drain is a small job. A failed circuit board, fan motor or compressor costs more.

Refrigerant leaks. How easy the leak is to reach, and how much refrigerant the system needs once it is repaired.

Make, model and age. Parts for older or less common units can take longer to get and cost more.

Access. High-level indoor units and outdoor units on brackets high up the wall take longer to work on safely.

Systems that run on R22 refrigerant, usually fitted before around 2004, can no longer be topped up because R22 is banned for servicing in the UK. For these, and for older units with a major fault, replacing with a modern, more efficient air conditioning system is often better value than a repair.

What our customers say

"Aäron has done a few bits of work for us over the last few years. He installed a new Mixergy water tank, serviced our heat pump and recently replaced a water pump and power cable. He is polite, knowledgeable and tidies up afterwards. Trustworthy, honest and good value. I would strongly recommend him for your heating, cooling, plumbing and green energy needs." - Neil, Google review

Air conditioning repair questions

It depends on what has failed. A blocked drain or a faulty sensor is a much smaller job than a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor. We find the fault first, then tell you what the repair will cost before we carry it out.

Send us the make, model and what's going wrong, and we'll arrange a visit to find the fault and explain the repair.
